The Eurasian Wryneck breeds in most of Europe and across Asia to the Pacific coast of China. It overwinters in Africa south of the Sahara, India and south-east Asia. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. In Ethiopia it is found from September to April in open woodland and bush country up to 2,400 metres.
