The Eastern Chanting-goshawk is distributed from south-eastern Ethiopia and Somalia through Kenya to Uganda and northern Tanzania. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It is found in arid and semi-arid bush, dry grassland and woodland up to 2,000 metres. It is usually found in drier habitats than Dark Chanting-goshawk M. metabates.

It is distinguished from that species by its yellow rather than orange-red cere, its paler grey colour and its white vs barred rump.
