Clapperton's Francolin is distributed in a belt across Africa south of the Sahara from the east of Mali to Ethiopia and south to Uganda. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It is found in semi-arid savanna and open woodland up to about 2,100 metres.

Clapperton's Francolin, Lake Langano, Ethiopia, January 2016 - click for larger image It has red skin around the eyes and a white throat. The sub-species shown here, P. c. sharpii does not have the dark moustachial stripe seen on the other sub-species.

The English and specific names come from Hugh Clapperton, a Scottish explorer who took part in an expedition to find the source of the river Niger. He died of fever in Nigeria while taking part in a second expedition
