The Chestnut-breasted Nigrita is distributed in tropical Africa from Gambia to Uganda. It is found in a variety of forested or wooded habitats where it feeds on insects, fruit such as figs, seeds, nectar and tree frog eggs.

It is slate-grey above and dark chestnut below and on the face and forehead.

Its song is a series of musical whistles.
