The Bleating Camaroptera is distributed throughout most of Africa south of the Sahara. See the distribution map at Birdlife International.

Some authorities split this species into Grey-backed Camaroptera C. brevicaudata and Green-backed Camaroptera C. brachyura. It is found in the undergrowth of forest and gallery forest as well as thick bush and gardens.

The call gives a clue as to why it is called the Bleating Camaroptera.
