The Black Stork breeds in much of Europe and Asia and migrates to Africa, India and south-east Asia during the northern winter. Some of the small population in Spain overwinter. See the distribution map at Birdlife International.

They are found near pools and rivers where they feed mainly on fish. While they do migrate in flocks they are the most solitary of storks otherwise.

The black is glossed with purple-green and the lower breast to vent is white. The long bill, eyering and legs are bright red.
