The African Openbill is found throughout much of Africa south of the Sahara and in the western part of Madagascar. See the distribution map at Birdlife International.

African Openbill, Majunga, Madagascar, November 2016 - click for larger image It is found in wetland habitats where it feeds mainly on aquatic snails and freshwater mussels using its specially adapted bill.

The sub-species in Madagascar A. l. madagascariensis is smaller than the nominate from elsewhere in Africa and has a thinner bill.
