Ayres's Hawk-eagle is distributed throughout a large part of Africa south of the Sahara. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It is found in a wide variety of woodland and forest where it can sit quietly waiting to swoop on its prey.

It feeds mainly on birds such as pigeons and doves though the Fan-tailed Raven that it is chasing in this photo at over 500 grams weight is too big for it.
