The Augur Buzzard is distributed in eastern and south-western Africa. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It is found in open country and areas with rocky outcrops. In Ethiopia it is seen between 1,500 and 4,500 metres.

Augur Buzzard, Harenna Forest, Ethiopia, January 2016 - click for larger image There are two morphs: The pale morph, seen here in photos 1 to 3, has white underparts. The female is larger than the male and tends to have a black or streaked throat. The dark morph, seen here in photo 4, is all black on the underparts. Both morphs have a distinctive rufous tail. In flight the silhouette shows the broad wings with bulging secondaries and the short tail.

It has a varied diet including snakes, lizards, rodents, mole rats, small birds, insects and carrion.
