The African Long-eared Owl is distributed in Ethiopia, Kenya and on the border of Uganda, Rwanda and the DR Congo. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It is found in a variety of forest habitats between 1,800 and 3,900 metres.

It is closely related to Northern Long-eared Owl A. otus but has longer wings, shorter ear tufts and a more powerful bill.
