The African Cuckoo is distributed in Africa from Senegal to Somalia and Kenya and south to Namibia and eastern South Africa. It migrates within Africa and follows the rains in order to breed. See the distribution map at Birdlife International.

It is very similar to the Common Cuckoo C. canorus but has a more yellow or yellow-orange base to the bill.

The song is also similar but subtly different from that of the Common Cuckoo.
