It is found mainly in lowland forest which is a habitat
under threat throughout most of its range. As a result it is classified as Near Threatened.
These photos are of the nominate sub-species noted for its black mandible and found along the eastern edge of the Andes. The other sub-species have a more chestnut-coloured mandible. |
