Colombia and Ecuador The Tyrian Metaltail is distributed on the coastal mountains of Venezuela, Santa Marta and in the Andes south to northern Bolivia. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It is found in open forest, cloudforest and scrub mainly between 2,500 and 3,300 though it can range from 1,500 to 4,200 metres. |

There are seven sub-species. Photos 1, 4, 5 and 6 are of the nominate sub-species found in the Andes from north-west Venezuela to northern Peru. It has a bronze tail. Photo 2 shows the sub-species M. t. districta found in the Santa Marta Mountains. It has a violet tail. Photo 3 shows a female. | |||
