The Tree Swallow breeds in Canada, Alaska and most of the rest of the USA while it winters in the southern USA, Central America and the West Indies. It breeds in open areas near water and nests in tree holes.

It is metallic blue-green above with blackish wings and white below with a slightly forked tail. It feeds on insects caught in the air.
