The Swallow-tailed Nightjar is distributed in the Andes from Colombia through Ecuador and Peru to central Bolivia. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It is found in elfin forest and humid forest edges from about 2,000 to 3,500 metres.

Swallow-tailed Nightjar, Guacamayos Ridge, Ecuador, November 2019 - click for larger image It is a dark brown with rufous spots but has no rufous collar unlike the similar Lyre-tailed Nightjar U. lyra. The male has very long tail streamers about 3 to 4 times its body length.
