There are 5 subspecies of Whiskered Flycatcher including this example, M. b. mastacalis of south-east Brazil.

The mastacalis subspecies has a tawny wash on its breast. Note also the large eyes and the conspicuous rictal bristles which give the bird its English name.

They are very active and restless birds found in humid forest and secondary woodland.
