The Subtropical Cacique is distributed from Venezuela through Colombia and Ecuador to central Peru. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It is found in the canopy and borders of subtropical forest.

Some authorities lump it with Scarlet-rumped Cacique which it closely resembles but it has a proportionately longer tail and heavier bill as well as vocalization differences.
