The Spot-backed Puffbird is found from north east Brazil through to Paraguay, northern Argentina and Bolivia. It prefers low dry forest and caatinga where they hunt insects such as beetles. |

It is similar in size to the
White-eared Puffbird
(Nystalus chacuru) and it also has a red bill but has no
white on the sides of the head. The lower throat and collar is a
yellowish brown while the breast and belly are white with black
spots.
The nest is a hole excavated in a bank or even on flat ground. |
