Spangled Cotinga (Cotinga cayana)
Male Spangled Cotinga, near Humaitá, Amazonas, Brazil, March 2003 - click for larger image The Spangled Cotinga is distributed throughout the Amazon and Orinoco basins and into the Guianas. It is found in humid forest and woodland where it is usually seen in the canopy or at the edges.
Male Spangled Cotinga, Borba, Amazonas, Brazil, August 2004 - click for larger image The male, as seen in these photos, is a bright turquoise blue with black showing through in places, mostly black wings and tail and a large throat and upper breast patch of bright magenta purple.

The female is dark greyish brown above with a scaly effect. This is also seen on the throat and breast while the rest of the undreparts are paler.
