The Sooty-fronted Spinetail is distributed from eastern Brazil to Bolivia and northern Argentina. It is found in a wide variety of forest and woodland edge habitats as well as arid, scrubby areas.

Sooty-fronted Spinetail, Barra do Quaraí, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, August 2004 - click for larger image It has a rufous crown with dusky forecrown, a rufous tail and rufous on the wings. Otherwise upperparts are olive-brown. The throat is white bordered on the lower throat by black.
