The Snowy Plover breeds both inland and on the coast of North America. Some coastal birds are resident while others, along with the inland breeders migrate to the coasts of Central America and the Pacific coast of North America. See the distribution map at Birdlife International.

Although numbers are still reasonable, it is classified as Near Threatened because of the loss and degredation of the habitat in its breeding areas.

It was previously lumped with the Old World's Kentish Plover C. alexandrinus.
