The Slaty-tailed Trogon is distributed from southern Mexico through Central America to the western side of Colombia and the extreme north-west of Ecuador. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It is found in tropical lowland forest and tall secondary growth.

Male Slaty-tailed Trogon, Tikal, Guatemala, March 2015 - click for larger image The male, shown here, has a red bill, a red eyering, green above with black wings and black-and-white wing coverts. The face and throat are black above a green chest and bright red underparts. The tail is black. The female is grey with red belly and a black tail. The bill is blackish above and red below.
