The Short-tailed Field-tyrant is distributed near the coast from south-west Ecuador to the extreme north of Chile. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It is found in arid country up to 1,200 metres.

Note the long legs, the short tail and the prominent wing-bars. It forages for insects along the ground and may perch in bushes close to the ground.
