The Scarlet-crowned Barbet is distributed in the western Amazonian regions of Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It is found near water in seasonally flooded forest, gallery forest, lake margins and river islands.

It is similar to Gilded Barbet C. auratus but the male has a scarlet crown.
