The Scaled Pigeon is distributed from southern Mexico through Central America to Peru on the west coast and south Brazil east of the Andes. It is generally found in humid forest and forest edges.

It is a large pigeon whose most noticeable features are its red bill and the scaly appearance of its whole neck and breast.

It keeps to the canopy where it feeds on fruits.
