The Santa Marta Bush-tyrant is endemic to the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta in Colombia where it is found on the edges of montane forest and woodland at between 2,100 and 2,900 metres. It is classified as Endangered by BirdLife International given its very small range around the San Lorenzo Ridge and the threats to the habitat up there.
