These attractive little birds show a high degree of sexual dimorphism with the male being rufous brown above and the throat, breast and mid-belly being black surrounded by white while the female, seen here in photo 5, is white below with very conspicuous dark streaks on the throat and breast.

Male Rusty-backed Antwren, Jaqueira, Pernambuco, Brazil, March 2004 - click for larger image Like other members of the Formicivora genus, it prefers scrubby habitat that is found in cerrado, borders of gallery forest and white-sand forest. It prefers more open areas than White-fringed Antwren F. grisea.

It is to be found in the interior of south-central South America.
