The Russet-crowned Warbler is distributed in the Andes from north-west Venezuela and Colombia through Ecuador and Peru to central Bolivia. See the distribution map at xeno-canto. It is found in forest and woodland mainly between 1,500 and 3,000 metres.

There are two groups of sub-species: the yellow-bellied and the white-bellied although the latter, as seen here, would be better called grey-bellied. Both groups have a grey face and an obvious orange-rufous crown stripe.
