The Rufous-bellied Euphonia is distributed throughout the Amazon Basin except north of the Amazon east of the rio Negro. It is found in the canopy and borders of humid forest often near epiphytes.

The male is dark blue on the upperparts, head, throat and chest with no yellow patch on the head. Lower breast and belly is orange rufous in colour.
