The Rufous-backed Inca-finch is endemic to Peru where it is found in dry montane scrub between 2,300 and 4,000 metres in the Upper Marañón valley. See the distribution map at Birdlife International.

It is also slightly larger than the Great Inca-finch with more extensive black on the face, more rufous on the back and paler underparts.
