The Rufous-backed Antvireo is distributed in south-east Brazil from Rio de Janeiro to Paraná. It is found in the Atlantic Rain Forest at between 750 and 1,700 metres and is generally seen foraging at higher levels in the mid-storey and canopy.

Female Rufous-backed Antvireo, Teresópolis, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, November 2008 - click for larger image The male, seen here in photo 1, is rufous above with a dark grey upper back. The head is dark grey with white spots giving a grizzled effect. 

The female, seen in photo 2, is similar but has a rufous crown and the spots on the face are buffy giving the face a more open and lighter look.
