The Royal Flycatcher is distributed in the Amazon Basin with disjunct populations on the Caribbean coast of Colombia, the Pacific coast of Ecuador and in south-east Brazil. It is found in lower growth of forest, woodland and their borders where it tends to be inconspicuous.

As usual the spectacular crest is folded away (it is only rarely displayed) but you can just make out the red and black tips at the back of the crown. Upperparts are brown above with cinnamon-rufous rump and rufous tail.
