The Atlantic Royal Flycatcher is distributed in eastern and south-eastern Brazil. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It is found in lower growth of forest, woodland and their borders where it tends to be inconspicuous.

Royal Flycatcher, Intervales, São Paulo, Brazil, April 2004 - click for larger image As usual the spectacular crest is folded away (it is only rarely displayed) but you can just make out the red and black tips at the back of the crown. Upperparts are brown above with cinnamon-rufous rump and rufous tail.

It is classified as Vulnerable given its low and declining population.
