The Red-legged Cormorant is distributed on the Pacific coast of South America from the Equator south beyond Chiloe in Chile and in southern Argentina. There is a distribution map on xeno-canto.

It breeds on cliffs on rocky coasts and islands and is found close to shore usually singly and never in large flocks.

With its red legs and grey underparts it is easily distinguished from other cormorants in the area. Note also the yellow bill with red base and the white patch on the sides of the neck.
