The Red-crested Finch is distributed mainly in central and southern Brazil, eastern Bolivia, northern Argentina and Paraguay and Uruguay but there are disjunct populations in north-east Brazil, Guyana and Peru. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It is found in dry, shrubby areas.

The male is dark red above with a pale eyering, a blackish crown and a semi-concealed red stripe on the crown. Underparts are a duller maroon.
