The Red-billed Parrot has a disjunct distribution in the highlands from northern Venezuela through Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia. See the distribution map at xeno-canto. It is found in humid forest, cloudforest and secondary growth mainly between 500 and 1,500 metres.

Red-billed Parrot, Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, Magdalena, Colombia, April 2012 - click for larger image The sub-species found at Santa Marta and seen in photos 1 and 2, P. s. saturatus, is darker than most other races and it has a dark streak on the upper mandible. Photo 3 from eastern Ecuador shows the sub-species P. s. corallinus with the mantle and back tinged grey and blue.
