The Puna Tinamou is distributed from central Peru to northern Chile through western Bolivia and into north-western Argentina. It is found in rocky, shrubby or grassy puna between 3500 and 5300 metres which is higher than any other tinamou. Photo 3 shows a trio in typical habitat.

Puna  Tinamou, Lauca N.P., Chile, February 2007 - click for larger image It is a large, generally olive-green tinamou but its most noticeable feature is its boldly striped head. It also has a chestnut crissum which is not visible in these photos.

Often seen in groups of 3, they sing in chorus for several minutes at a time.
