The Planalto Hermit is found from north-east Brazil to Bolivia, Paraguay and northern Argentina.

It inhabits scrubby areas and dry forest as well as gardens and parks.

Planalto Hermit, Chapada Diamantina, Bahia, Brazil, March 2004 - click for larger image It has very long, white central tail feathers, a long, slightly decurved bill, reddish upper tail coverts and cinnamon underparts.

As well as small insects, it feeds on nectar. We watched the first bird trap-lining in a garden in Mucugê while the other 3 photos were taken in the garden of Casa da Géleia, Lençois.
