The Ocellated Tapaculo is distributed in the Andes from Venezuela to the extreme north of Peru. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It is found in the dense undergrowth of forest at between 1,900 and 3,900 metres and is especially associated with Chusquea bamboo.
