The Northern Streaked Flycatcher is found from Mexico through Central America to the north of South America. See the distribution map at Birdlife International.

Normally lumped with Southern Streaked Flycatcher M. solitarius it has been split by the HBW and Birdlife International checklist on the basis that Southern Streaked Flycatcher has less ochre on the wings and tail, broader and deeper streaking above and below and differences in vocalisations.
