The Mitred Parakeet is distributed from northern Peru to north-west Argentina. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It is found in montane woodland and forest edges at between 1,600 and 3,400 metres.

It is similar to Cordilleran Parakeet P. frontatus but it lacks red on the wing and has scattered red feathers on the sides of the neck and breast.
