The Merlin is distributed almost entirely in the northern hemisphere where it breeds in the higher latitudes and migrates in the lower latitudes during the winter. It is found in a wide variety of habitats.

This bird was one of 3 that we saw in Cuba all of which were hunting along paths in the woodland. Merlins hunt mainly smallish birds.
