The Many-coloured Rush Tyrant is distributed from south-eastern Brazil to most of Argentina with disjunct populations in Chile, in coastal Peru and in the Andes from Peru through Bolivia to northern Argentina. See the distribution map at xeno-canto. It is found in reed beds, marshes and lake edges but rarely moves away from the reeds. From sea-level to 4,200 metres in some Andean lakes.
