The Magpie Tanager is large and unmistakable with its long black and white tail, its yellow iris and its blue-black hood.

It is found in forest borders and secondary growth or clearings around the Amazon Basin and in south-east Brazil.

Magpie Tanager, Parque de Zizo, São Paulo, Brazil, November 2006 - click for larger image These photos are of the subspecies Cissopis leverianus major which is from south-east Brazil and is larger and has a blacker back than the nominate subspecies found further north.

The Magpie Tanager is conspicuous, noisy and behaves a bit like a jay.

Photo 3 shows a juvenile beside an adult. Note the dark eye and the reduced amount of white on the wing-coverts.
