The Lemon-throated Barbet is distributed in western Amazonia and the Andean foothills of Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia and Brazil. See the distribution map at xeno-canto. It is found in lowland forest and is often associated with rivers and lakes.

Its song is said to be reminiscent of a galloping horse.
