The Hook-billed Kite is distributed from Mexico through Central America to a large part of tropical South America. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It is found in rainforest, forest edges and clearings.

Hook-billed Kite, Quebrada Upaquihua, San Martin, Peru, October 2018 - click on image for a larger view There are a variety of plumages but the main distinguishing features are the bare orange-yellow crescent above the eye, the very hooked black bill with yellow-greenish facial skin and the whitish iris.
