The Hangnest Tody-Tyrant is distributed in eastern Brazil from northern Bahia to São Paulo.

It is a Brazilian endemic and is found in Atlantic Rain Forest and secondary woodland. This bird in Boa Nova was in the dry forest mata de cipó .

This bird gave a short display involving a cocked tail and rapid opening and closing of the wings as shown in photos 3 and 4.
