Peru and Ecuador The Guayaquil Woodpecker is distributed in the lowlands and western slope of the Andes from south-west Colombia through Ecuador to north-west Peru. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It is found in humid and dry forest, secondary growth and mangroves. |

Photo 1 shows a female while photos 2 and 3 are of males. It is similar in many ways to Crimson-crested Woodpecker C. melanoleucos which has a black back. It is classified as Near Threatened because its numbers are declining due to habitat loss. | |||
