The Grey-breasted Mountain-Toucan is distributed in the Andes from central Colombia through Ecuador to Peru. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It is found in montane forest on the east slope mainly between 2,300 and 3,500 metres.

The nominate is found in the north while this subspecies A. h. lateralis is found towards the south. It is distinguished mainly by its pale rather than dark eye and the narrow whitish flanks.
