The Great Antshrike is unmistakable with its heavy hooked bill, crest and bright red iris. The male, as seen in photos 1 to 3, is black above with two white wing-bars. The female in photos 4 and 5 is rufous above rather than black. |

It is found west of the Andes
from Colombia to northern Peru and east of the Andes south to
northern Argentina but is missing from south east Brazil.
There are about 10 sub-species. Photo 1 from Roraima is of the sub-species T. m. semifasciatus while the other photos are of T. m. stagurus which has the most white on the tail and wing-bars and has the palest female. |

It can be difficult to see because it favours dense undergrowth and tangly thickets in clearings and forest borders. They are usually found in pairs.
