The Great Antshrike is unmistakable with its heavy hooked bill, crest and bright red iris. The male, as seen in the first two photos, is black above with two white wing-bars. The female in the third photo is rufous above rather than black.

Male Great Antshrike, Chapada Diamantina, Bahia, Brazil, July 2002 - click for larger image It is found west of the Andes from Colombia to northern Peru and east of the Andes south to northern Argentina but is missing from south east Brazil.

It can be difficult to see because it favours dense undergrowth and tangly thickets in clearings and forest borders. They are usually found in pairs.

There are illustrations in Ridgely & Tudor, Volume 2, Plate 15; Hilty & Brown, Plate 27; and Ridgely & Greenfield, Plate 60.
