The Golden-crowned Warbler is distributed in Brazil and Bolivia south of the Amazon Basin and into adjacent areas of Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay with disjunct populations in Colombia, Venezuela, Central America and Mexico.

The orange-rufous crown can be hard to see. It is bordered by black stripes and a whitish superciliary. Underparts are yellow though some sub-species have white undertail coverts.
